So, I was talking to my wife yesterday about my very first BLOG post and I was super exited that I actually got the thing to work and I even posted a picture (a big deal for me) LOL!!! Then she proceeded to tell me that the post was great but maybe I should have introduced myself first so people reading understand who I am and what we are all about. I totally didn't think about that but she was right, I should have started with this and then went into what I wrote yesterday. Oh well no big deal I am now going to do that introduction and we can all have a little giggle about it.
My name is Gary Benoit and I have been a police officer for 20 years and worked 95% of my time on the front line serving the community. I am originally from Newfoundland and grew up in Saskatchewan. I am married to an amazing woman who is my partner in life and our company Benoit Wellness Consulting. We launched the Front Line Resiliency Project (F.L.R.P) with the mission to help all front line workers and their families reduce stress, improve their relationships, build resilience, and achieve work life balance.
My wife and partner in this journey is Colette Benoit and she has a BPA in Criminal Justice and has been by my side for the last 15 years. She has experienced the highs and lows associated with being the spouse of a first responder and has shared the stresses involved. She is passionate about helping families improve their relationships and become stronger.
We have a 12-year-old son who is really cool. He likes making movies and building scripts. He is a great rock climber and loves to eat Macaroni and Cheese.
During my 20 years I have been subjected to a number of situations that affected me. Stressful and life changing situations that really weigh on a person and it causes a change in the person. Those situations caused me to change and things started to unravel. I was in a place where I was ruining my relationship with my wife, I was not present when I was with my family and I was angry a lot of the time. About 7 years ago I had to make another change, a deliberate and intentional change. I decided to change the way I was showing up in my relationships with my spouse, and my family, and with my friends. I started to change my mind set and believed that there was an amazing balanced life out there for me. I did this because Colette was always striving to be better and she pushed me to make that positive change.
I accomplished this change and for the past 4 years I have been living more balanced, with less stress, and am excited about what is coming next. This feeling of excitement and balance is what I want for everyone. I want people to realize their own potential and to strive to be the best version themselves every day.
This blog will be the combination of sharing personal experiences from the front line and sharing the weight of the badge with you from a behind the scenes personal perspective. I will also share my personal thoughts and reflections on certain situations that I find myself in and thinking about. I will not share any personal details of people involved or specific locations of the story. You may even see an article or two from my wife about her perspective as spouse. I hope during this process we can inspire some change in those that read this and provide some guidance to those that reach out to us. We may not have every answer but together we can come up with a solution and plan to move forward.
Until next time! Remember you are STRONG, RESILIENT, and BALANCED!
